-----------December 25, 2006CD Review: Dove Brothers (Shout It Out)![]() RATING: 4 Stars Website: www.dovebrothersquartet.com Producers: McCray Dove and Gerald Milligan Song Titles: "Joshua," "Those Tender Hands," "Go The Distance," "Run On," "Look For Me At Jesus' Feet," "Clouds Roll Back," "He Didn't Throw The Clay Away," "Shout It Out," "Thanks To Calvary," "Stand By Me," and "Lonesome Road" Don't let the cheaply designed artwork on the cover fool you...there's some excellent music on Shout It Out by the Dove Brothers Quartet. This project was recorded in mid-2006, and I'm finally getting around to reviewing it. Yes...I know the group has since released a label project, but I wouldn't want you to overlook this CD when you're standing at their record table. Shout It Out kicks off with a McCray Dove original song called "Joshua" in the vein of past Dove Brothers favorites like "Didn't It Rain" and "Get Away Jordan." Three songs later, the traditional "Run On" is another that would fit this description. McCray's punctuated delivery of a slew of words in a short amount of time certainly could be viewed (very loosely) as Southern Rap. I don't know if that's going to catch on as a new genre or not. In addition to McCray, group members Jerry Kelso and David Hester have written original songs for this recording. Hester's simple "Go The Distance" features his robust tones on the verses with the rest of the group joining him on the choruses. The artificial brass lines on Kelso's "Clouds Roll Back" don't quite suit the character of the group, but it's a pretty decent song overall. The rest of Shout It Out is made up of familiar standards. These include Eric Dove's rendition of "Those Tender Hands," Jerry Martin's excellent version of "Look For Me At Jesus' Feet" (with a spot of tenor flash popping up to a high G with ease in the middle of the second verse), and McCray's take on the popular Lester's song, "He Didn't Throw The Clay Away." The final four songs mostly showcase David Hester. The title cut mixes it up a bit, featuring Hester at the beginning, with McCray covering a portion in the middle, and Martin taking control of the melody to wrap things up. Hester is then back in the spotlight for "Thanks To Calvary," an enthusiastic version of "Stand By Me," and his cover of JD Sumner's "Lonesome Road." This latter tune has been a huge hit for the group in concert settings, but the recording lacks the comedic moments you'd experience at a live performance. Overall, Shout It Out is a very good custom/table recording that has many of the elements that made the earliest recordings by the Dove Brothers Quartet so popular. If you enjoyed the group when they first hit the road, you'll enjoy Shout It Out. Labels: CD Review
