Quality Music On Radio

MY OPINION - FOR WHAT ITS WORTH

Note to SG Radio:

I hear a lot of talk about playing quality music on Southern Gospel radio. When I meet radio people.. it's always a subject that comes up. We must play good stuff! We need to play quality!,.. and so on.. and etc.

But.. then I keep hearing too much "less than quality" music on SG radio.. and it isn't just the small market stations.. poor quality music is getting on the air everywhere. Even XM radio (the latest SG favorite son) doesn't seem to know how to weed out the "so - so" songs and artists,.. and present the cream of the crop. I have come to the realization that many of us apparently have different opinions as to what is "quality" .. and what isn't. Our decisons on which songs get on the air.. and which ones go into the garbage can.. are not consistant from programmer to programmer.

And here's a shot of honesty.. Some of you are wrong. I say this with all confidence. Some of you need lessons in programming practices. There are way too many bad music things happening in SG radio. From bad music production to bad song writing and poor singing. Quit airing songs just because the promoter tells you they are good.. or the artists sent you a free CD.. Don't cheapen your format. In the long run.. an artist will appreciate getting airplay on your station if you are playing only "quality". If you are playing anybody and everybody.. then a spin on your station really isn't worth much.. is it?

I challenge you to listen to your stations.. listen to every song.. and if you hear one that is just a little less than "very good".. pull it from your programming. Many times I have added a song.. then I hear it "on the air".. and I can't wait to get back to the station to get it off the air. Always be a critic of what gets on your facility.. if it isn't the best.. then don't play it. There is more than enough geat Southern Gospel music to go around... don't settle for anything less than a great sound for your station.

If I can help in any way.. Let me know.
