David,
Prior to the posting my previous reply, I failed to pick up on your last point about "secular" and "church" settings.
You have a very good point.
I would tend to think that believers in Christ rush to judgement other believers in Christ quicker than unbelievers in Christ.
Commenting further would risk going into doctrinal and other differences which would only detract from the original post.
 Just keep it as simple!
As for me, I would go anywhere and everywhere just as long I do not compromise my walk with Jesus Christ.
As for you, that is your call in consultation with Jesus Christ.

When in a church setting, if the church stands for anything other than salvation by grace through faith, that is when I might question the group singing.

Knowledge is beneficial.
Going into unknown waters, just keep it simple.
Go into a little deeper, you better have the gift of discernment and the Holy Spirit leading the way.
I would like to give artists and groups a little credit because most groups are guided by a leader or mentor that traveled the same waters.
You have to be aware of a worship style with a small thing hand clapping during the song.
I attended a concert where the leader of the group clapped for 10 minutes with no response from the congregation.
That was a no-no to me and I grew up clapping and raising my hand.

Our group's policy is the same. We perform at many different denominational churches and leave the doctrine to the preacher.
Our job is to proclaim the message of Jesus. He said "Go tell", we do it in song. The rest is up to the Lord.
