NQC 2008: Monday Via Solid Gospel, Part 1

There was some question about whether NQC would be streamed live via Solid Gospel this year. I just tuned in through their website. Follow the links. (I had to use Internet Explorer. Firefox wouldn’t work.)

I assume what I’m hearing is 2008 live.

8:10 PM – The Booth Brothers are just leaving the stage.

8:15 PM – The Dixie Melody Boys come out singing “Give The World A Smile” a cappella. They sound pretty tight on this.

8:16 PM – Now they’re hitting “That’s Enough”  with piano.

8:18 PM – Straight into “Roll On, Jordan.” The tenor is a bit bright for the blend (at least via internet), but rhythmically they’re sticking together well. O’Neal’s pitch goes slightly astray at the end.

8:20 PM – Up next is “A Soul Such As I.” It’s going to be a pretty traditional set.

8:23 PM – O’Neal quickly introduces a new member. He said Joe Kitson, which begs the question…any relation to Greater Vision’s recent addition? They sing “It Will Be Worth It All” going into the commercial break.

8:26 PM – And they’re back singing another traditional song. I don’t recognize it. The title is likely “When Those Gates Unfold.” The harmony is a bit pitchy, but the tenor has some nice tones on this one where he flips a phrase up an octave.

8:28 PM – O’Neal is a great emcee who always wins the crowd over. Ah…here we go with “When I Cross To The Over Side Of Jordan.” This song should probably have retired with Devin McGlamery…or McCray Dove. We’ll see if they encore it nine times tonight. Here comes encore number one. The tracks have been replaced with live musicians now, and the crowd is responding. Greg Goodman, the Solid Gospel emcee, cuts in to explain what’s coming up tomorrow after the first encore.

The DMB song at 8:26 is titled “What A Wonderful Day”. I believe it was first made famous by Big Lew & the Prophets, though maybe it wasvaround before that. Perfect Heart also recorded it during their Garry Shephard days. FWIW, I’ve always liked the song.

BTW, I’ll be at NQC Thurs-Sat as usual. I’ll keep an eye out for you. Would be nice to meet you after following your writing on the internet all these years.
