NQC 2008: Monday Via Solid Gospel, Part 2
Reactions to Monday evening’s NQC performances continue…
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong about this particular point. If 2007 was the 50th ANNIVERSARY of the first NQC in 1957, wouldn’t 2008 be the 52nd event? I thought I was good at math, but several have referred to this as the 51st year of NQC (both on the air and on the internet). I’m nit-picky…I know.
8:38 PM – The Dixe Echoes open with “How Big Is God” featuring Pat Barker. This song is on their new CD, So Many Reasons, which I haven’t got around to reviewing yet.
8:42 PM – Randy Shelnet, Jr. is featured next on “Until You Find The Lord.” The Echoes are great at this classic style.
8:45 PM – “I’m Gonna Move To The Sky” features Randy Shelnut, Sr. and moves at a rapid clip. Varnado drops staccato chords on the upbeat perfectly…long, short, long, short, etc.
8:48 PM – Shelnut, Sr. is featured next on “Little Is Much.”
8:52 PM – Last year, NQC played some flashback videos between sets. It made for smoother transitions. It sounds like they’re doing the same thing this year. I’m hearing the Statesmen right now.
8:53 PM – Gold City begins their set with “I Cast My Bread Upon The Water.” This is Bruce Taliaferro’s NQC main stage debut, and he doesn’t disappoint.
8:57 PM – Aaron McCune is featured next on “Walking And Talking With My Lord,” a song written and popularized by the late great JD Sumner.
9:03 PM – After a break from the main stage, we return to live coverage as Gold City sings “What Children Believe.” This is the sort of song that could gain the attention of mainstream Country radio if given an adequate push.
9:07 PM – Gold City takes us on a trip down memory lane next for “Robe Of White.” Steve Ladd transitions into an encore with ease. Having the Band Of Gold helps pump up the crowd at moments like these. UPDATE: Brandon Coomer, who has access to the video feed from NQC, said there was no Band Of Gold at NQC tonight. My bad! That last encore sounded like live musicians were involved…at least to me.
