Hug A Non-Artist Songwriter Today

Prolific songwriter Sue C. Smith laments that CD reviewers don’t care about writers…only artists. I wish she’d cite examples, because I naturally wonder about who she’s aiming at when she expresses that viewpoint. I have campaigned for recognition of non-artist songwriters for years. For example, the non-artist songwriter category that Sogospelnews awards annually was a category I suggested and endorsed

I fully agree with Sue that a review should not imply that an artist wrote all the songs if that isn’t true. Reviewers should always attempt to be accurate, even if they’re limited in terms of space.

Sue, please don’t hesitate to send me a note if I ever do that!

Unfortunately, the nature of the beast dictates that the songwriter/artists are out front and in the public eye more than the non-performing songwriters. Stage/face time with gospel music fans dictates that the Rodney Griffins, Gerald Crabbs, and Mark Bishops of the world are more recognizable than writers that are just as skilled, or in a lot of cases, more skilled. Some of these great songwriters include Sue Smith, Joel Lindsey, Marty Funderburk, Twila LeBar, Tony Wood, Dianne Wilkinson and a host of others. Your average gospel music fan wouldn’t know them if they passed them on the street, and they wouldn’t recognize their name at the top of a song….but they would recognize the song. The main thing is that they would be blessed by the song. For the songwriter who is not a performing artist, that has to be the main thing.

Can’t do it, DBM. My arms aren’t long enough to reach any of them songwriters. Besides, do you honestly think Sue Smith wants a hug from me?
