Once again, I’ve received a non-Southern Gospel CD requesting a review. Fortunately, this CD is pretty tame compared to some I’ve received in the past. The band’s publicist emailed me after sending it and stated that they were interested in getting opinions from various sources, even if it was outside the scope of my specialty.
Eclyptic is a four member rock band from Ohio. Group members Chris Bohrer and Derik Kroeze wrote all of their songs. Although the band has been together for more than six years, they’re still fairly young. They started when they were seventh graders. After winning a talent show as high school freshmen, they opened for the Moody Blues. They’re out of high school now. Time will tell whether they continue in the music business. They don’t have the sort of sound that big music labels are wanting to push right now. Eclyptic has a throwback sound that reminds me of the Beatles to a certain extent. They’re good enough that they could probably find success as an indie band.
As is typical for young bands, their songs tend to lock into a chord pattern and repeat a motif over and over. They’re fairly inventive with their grooves, though, and their lyrics follow a theme. It’s not simplistic repetition or random thoughts like some of the non-gospel CDs I’ve reviewed. They certainly aren’t virtuoso instrumentalists…you’ve probably heard most of these guitar licks before…but they show strong potential. Their vocals aren’t noticeably unique at this point, either. There is no Darius Rucker in Eclyptic, but on the plus side, they don’t sound bad.
