Voices Of Lee On NBC’s Sing Off

Voices of Lee is a college a cappella group that has appeared in concert with several prominent Southern Gospel artists in recent years. Now, they’re appearing on NBC’s The Sing Off, a competition between a cappella groups hosted by Nick Lachey.

In the first episode, they explain that Lee University is faith based, and that Jesus Christ is important to them.

Watch the first episode below via Hulu:

(No, that isn’t Voices Of Lee in the still shot.)

If you just want to watch the parts with Voices Of Lee, jump to the first commercial break. They’re also in the opening segment with the other seven groups singing Queen/David Bowie”s “Pressure,” and of course, they appear in the last segment where one of the first four competing groups is eliminated.

(UPDATE, 12/17/09)-I updated this post to add links to Parts 1&2 of night two:

VoL are amazing at what they do – mostly because of their director Danny Murray. I kind of got my fill of them while I was at the school – but I definitely understand why people like them.

I sang with the group for about a week my freshman year of college – they were re-auditioning me for a baritone spot they had open (I had auditioned for a tenor spot). Their baritones are really just bass-lite – so I couldn’t hack it since I pretty much have no low end to my voice. But it was pretty cool to see how the inner workings of the group jelled.

The blonde gal in the group is Latisha Wilson, and she sure is doing my hometown of Hiawassee, Georgia proud.

It’s great to see that group getting this kind of attention. I’ve enjoyed their music for several years now.

So many southern gospel baritones are pretty much choir tenors. There IS a difference. What I would call true baritones are those such as Scott Howard and Mark Lanier (although they might not have some of the high notes some have.) Some like Trammell and Danny Riley can do both, but it seems like most are one or the other.
