Spider-Man Will Reboot Without Raimi

Details are HERE.

Sam Raimi made two terrific Spider-Man movies with his star, Tobey McGuire, and a third that, while failing to sustain the forward momentum of the first two, wasn’t that bad. I was looking forward to this franchise getting back on track with the fourth film, but reports today indicate that Raimi has pulled out.

Oh well.

Hopefully it will be someone good, but I wonder if Tobey or Dunst will hang in there.

It wouldn’t make a great deal of sense, visually, to use the same actors if the storyline isn’t going to continue. It’s going to be a mess anyway, because they’re starting over too soon…continuing with part of the same cast, but having them go back to high school would only make it that much worse, in my opinion.

Sounds like the makings of a direct-to-video “prequel,” ala “The Dukes Of Hazzard” or “Dumb And Dumberer.” From what I’ve heard, Sam Raimi threw in the towel after several scripts were rejected.

The problem is that Sony, rather than leaving well-enough alone, seems to be headed down the same path that Warner Bros. did with “Batman and Robin,” in that they HAVE to have a movie out, regardless of how good (or bad) it is. Take a break from Spiderman. Let the public interest build back up.

The article indicates the franchise will be rebooted…which isn’t a prequel and isn’t a sequel…it’s starting all over with Peter Parker back in high school.

The same thing happened with Batman to great success. Hulk was also rebooted in 2008 after the 2003 film failed to impress. 2009′s Star Trek is a hybrid. It’s technically a prequel, but they went ahead and set the stage so that the new cast doesn’t have to “become” the old cast. But again, the reboot came because the last few Star Trek movies weren’t really setting any attendance records. They had a great run, though.

The difference with Spider-Man is that it’s always been successful. The last film was criticized as the weakest of the three, but it still brought in a lot of box office cash. I think Raimi was determined not to let that happen with a fourth film, took too long developing a script, and began missing his deadlines with Sony. They had originally planned to have the film out in May 2011, but now, they’re backing it up another year.

Oh, and quartet-man, the article does say the cast is out along with Raimi…that’s not to say they couldn’t return, though. This is Hollywood, after all.

I think it’s a bad idea to start back in high school…let well enough alone. If anything, I’d rather see it placed years ahead.
