NQC Poll Conclusions

112 of you participated in a poll I set up a few days ago, and now there’s a list of results posted HERE.

It’s interesting to me that we only needed about 25 votes to establish a pattern. The averages generally went down over time, but the grouping didn’t change very much. Jason Crabb was the only artist I noticed who made a large shift. He was at number 18 in the early going, but ended up midway down the list (still ahead of the other soloists).

Which brings up a notable point…voters highly prefer trios and quartets over soloists, but they don’t mind bluegrass as long as it’s the Isaacs.

Does the poll “mean anything?” In terms of NQC making drastic programming decisions based on the poll, I would say no, it isn’t conclusive enough for that. The voters found out about the poll and participated in a relatively random manner, though, so it does represent a fair sample of opinions. I didn’t target it to anyone other than those who normally read this blog. Some people passed the word along on other forums after seeing it here and at least one artist took a personal interest in the results. I allowed nature to take its course rather than telling individuals about it or encouraging anyone in particular to be sure to vote.

Even so, the poll wasn’t perfect. I spotted some mild hanky-panky in the voting. Three pairs of voters submitted nearly identical lists (presumably two members of the family…I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt). Also, some voters submitted lists that had a few votes of 4 with all the other votes being 1. If I throw ALL of the questionable votes out, though, the final list looks virtually the same.

The poll is an accurate enough reflection of general opinion, I think, that NQC should consider a couple of things it revealed. When a group has been coming to NQC for years, and they get extremely low marks, maybe they shouldn’t have prime time scheduling. Also, a group receiving high, high marks probably needs to be on stage when most of the crowd is still there.

Maybe NQC will limit the time allotted to the Pfeifers and the Specks. And maybe NQC will schedule Triumphant in a prime time spot rather than placing them in the last hour so much.

What are your thoughts?

Maybe the logic is to book the higher-scoring groups in off-hours in an effort to keep crowds longer, and put the lower-ranking groups smack in the middle, when most people will be there regardless….

I noticed low ratings for a couple of up and coming groups that are on the main stage for the first time this year. Liberty Quartet and Calvary’s Voice both finished near the bottom of the poll (although Liberty did pretty well for a lesser known group). I hope this is due to people not being familiar with them rather than not liking them, because they are both very good groups. I had the opportunity to see both groups in an afternoon showcase last year at NQC, and I was very impressed. If people gave them low ratings because they do not know them, I hope they will not plan to skip their performance (as a rating of 1 indicates) because they will miss two great groups.

I am a little surprised about the Dixie Echoes. I love them and gave them 4, but i didn’t realize they were that popular.

Brad,
It would be significant if a group making their main stage debut scored high. It’s not particularly surprising if they score low, since as you mentioned, fewer people are familiar with them. The low end of the results is more telling for groups that have been coming to NQC for a while.

Glenn, I do think the DE have picked up in popularity over the past 2-3 years. I was surprised by Inspirations and McKameys. I thought those two groups had cult followings, but apparently not enough. The group that actually made the top 10 that I didn’t expect was Mark Trammell.

Just for grins, I did a comparison between the poll results and the actual NQC lineup for Saturday night. (I chose Saturday since I think they’re going to need a strong lineup without the fan awards.) There are 17 groups scheduled for that evening, and 14 of them scored in the top 23 of the poll. Allowing for the 3 or 4 of the 23 that would probably not be there anyway because they’re in the Gaither stable, I think the NQC powers did a pretty good job of selecting a lineup that would please the poll participants.

Kyle,
Generally speaking, NQC saves three or four bigger names for the final hour each evening. It makes perfect sense…more people stay to the end. Still, a good number of people are usually gone by the last hour regardless of who is closing, so if it’s not necessarily an honor if the same group is closing more than one night.

The reason I brought up Triumphant is because they’ve been positioned near the end two out of three nights for the last two years. Their 2007 schedule is more typical of what NQC assigns to a top group.

Triumphant Quartet’s Past NQC Schedule
2009 – Monday 8:13; Wednesday 10:42 (next to last); Friday 10:50 (next to last)

2008 – Monday 11:03 (last); Thursday 8:08; Saturday 10:51 (third from the last)

2007 – Tuesday 6:01 (first), Friday 11:27 (last); Saturday 9:28

2006 – Thursday 11:52 (third from last)

2005 – Saturday 11:18 (fourth from last) – This was their first year on the main stage.

2004 – Friday Afternoon Showcase 12:00 noon

Wanda,
There is an assumption made by some (I don’t agree with it) that the strongest McKameys and Inspirations fans are less likely to be active on the internet.

I do think the assumption might be correct if you’re comparing these groups to EHSS or another group that has a strong appeal with young fans.

But I believe fans of these groups are just as likely to be on the internet as fans of the Kingdom Heirs or the Dixie Echoes or the Dove Brothers where the demographic is generally older fans.

David I agree the internet is common across all demographics this day and time. My question to everyone is this;

Does this poll give indications of what the fan base really wants, or are we still groping in the dark as SG as been doing for the past 10-15 years?

I will say this one thing, the poll agrees with what we hear as a group virtually every time out, but the folks that come to our concerts may be very biased toward our traditional style of music. My gut feeling is, the fans are far more traditional oriented than most entities within SG want to admit. But it is a hunch on my part based on what we hear.
