Indiana Politics Meets Southern Gospel

Dennie Oxley, a man whose credentials include a ten year stint with a “Southern Gospel quartet,” is the current Republican Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Indiana. I found that information HERE.

“Known for his singing voice, Oxley was a member of a Southern Gospel quartet for 10 years.”

Are any of you familiar with his career as a singer? Would the average Southern Gospel fan recognize the name of the quartet with which he sang?

UPDATE (June 21): He was a member of the Valley Creek Boys Gospel Quartet…doesn’t that roll off the tongue easily? Thanks to Daniel Mount for pointing out that he’s a Democrat rather than a Republican. I glanced at a reference to him being a “State Rep,” and got his party affiliation incorrect as a result.

Best I can find out, he is/was a member of the Valley Creek Boys Gospel Quartet. No, David, I’m not making this up.

I’d say I am at least an average Gospel Music fan, but I’ve never heard of this quartet.

It’s probably one of the hundreds of “weekend warrior” groups that are scattered upon the countryside.

There was a Valley Creek Boys Quartet in Kentucky at one time, about 10 years ago. Not sure if this is the same group he was in or not.

Bill Hefner – orignal member of the Harvesters Quartet and always a guest at Charlie Waller’s event – represented North Carolina’s 8th District in Congress for about 20 years.

DBM, could it be that we have a natural assumption that an SG performer / politician is a Republican?

Well, you might. :-)

As for me, I actually looked, saw “Rep.” and mistook that for the party name.

By the way, Mr. Hefner, who Ed Butler mentioned above, was also a Democrat.

Didn’t Troy Burns, formerly of the Inspirations, run for political office in North Carolina a few years back?
