-----------June 7, 2007It's A Tractor! My father finished restoring an old D-14 Allis Chalmers tractor a few months ago. He inherited it from my grandfather, who bought it in 1957. This is the sort of thing he has enjoyed doing ever since retiring. A few minutes ago, I uploaded a series of his photographs to my new ShoutLife page, which can be accessed at www.shoutlife.com/musicscribe. Under my photo at the left side of the page, click the link with the appropriate label to view him and his orange machine. I suspect there's a reasonable percentage of Southern Gospel fans who live on farms or at least grew up in a rural area and/or enjoy looking at old tractors. By the way, my father also designed and built the gazebo you can see in the background of some of the photos...with no plans. He's good with stuff like that. Labels: Odds and Ends May 4, 2007Southern Gospel And StuffI've been browsing the results of typing "Southern Gospel" in the search engine at CDBaby.com, a website for independent artists. Some of the more interesting results include: 1. Bobby Lounge (not for the faint of heart - Doug Harrison blogged on this peculiarity some time ago - that bizarre booger can play some boogie woogie piano, though) 2. Big Nate (categorized as "Southern Gospel Rap" - I kid you not) 3. Ras Alan (Appalachian Reggae - "weaves southern gospel, roots reggae, early country, Jamaican ska, flatpicked bluegrass, the rhythmic elements of Rastafari and a lifetime of songwriting experience into a spiritually compelling fabric" - their words, not mine) 4. Mars Arizona (the first cut is sort of a female rockabilly sound, and the others are all over the stylistic map - may as well throw "southern gospel" in as a descriptor, I guess) 5. Committed (pretty good acappella music at this link, but it doesn't sound "Southern Gospel" to me) 6. Old Fashion Faithful ("Musically arranged and produced by Capricorn Records artist Keith Evans, 'Little is Much' is called the best work of his career" - their words, not mine - my mind reels with observations that are better left unsaid - sadly, one of the DJs at my local Southern Gospel radio station would play this stuff on the air if someone sent him a copy) 7. SGR Rhyme Family (for those who really enjoyed Big Nate and want to hear even more SGRap) Labels: Humor, Odds and Ends April 16, 2007Bill Gaither's Health and the Atlanta ConcertBill Gaither missed the Memphis, TN "Jubilate' re-schedule" date on Thursday. Gloria went along to fill in for him. Word has it that he had some issue with the heart stint that was put in back during the Myrtle Beach "Gaither-Fest" when Mark Lowry had to fill-in. But, Bill flew into Atlanta in time for Friday night's show and he honestly seemed fine. (Aside from Bill leaving the stage about a minute or two before the very end of the concert, he was there "all along.") The concert was tremendous, as usual. I really didn't "notice" that the tour's artist roster had been cut. The music was still plentiful and there wasn't a boring part to the night. I don't have a rundown of the songs... but I do have some pictures that I snapped of some backstage moments that I'll post soon. -Daniel Britt Labels: Concert Review, members, Odds and Ends January 25, 2007Southern Gospel look-alikesThis link is a hoot. It's on Steve Weatherford's website (Steve is the son of Earl & Lily Fern Weatherford). Be prepared to laugh a lot as you note the resemblance and see the side by side pictures of secular celebs next to our beloved Gospel singers. ...And I KNEW Danny Jones looked a lot like George Costanza! (in case you wonder, Peter Furler of the Newsboys is NOT a SG artist, but he is the grandson-in-law of Eva Mae LeFevre) -Daniel Britt Labels: members, Observations, Odds and Ends January 11, 2007Wannabe Bass Singer AlertSulfur Hexaflouride is five times as heavy as air. Inhaling this gas causes your voice to drop, the opposite effect of helium. The gas is non-toxic, so I guess it's safer than smoking cigarettes to lower your voice! I don't know how often you'd have to snort it to maintain a lowered voice...probably no more than some singers hit their water bottle. :o) Heavier than air gases provide some interesting experiments.
