A Nutshell Review
Avalon (Sparrow)

by David Murray

Although the lyrics are clichéd and predictable at times, the self-titled debut release from Avalon is redeemed by Charlie Peacock's superb production and Avalon's excellent vocal harmonies. Avalon fits the 4 Him meets Point Of Grace category with two male and two female vocalists. In addition to eight rather typical pop tunes, there's also a nice a cappella rendition of the traditional hymn, "My Jesus I Love Thee," and a peppy gospel version of Andraé Crouch's "Jesus Is Lord." "Give It Up" has a rhythmic Newsboys style accompaniment. "This Love" has a house dance intro. Throw in some slower material like "The Greatest Story" and "Don't Be Afraid." Then stir it up. Avalon offers a satisfying (though not very original) mix.
