Let Freedom Ring
Anthony Burger

Label: Spring House Music Group

Anthony Burger has often performed patriotic numbers in his concerts and on recordings. Let Freedom Ring collects ten of his flag waving arrangements on the same CD. With soundbytes from President George W. Bush and Rev. Billy Graham interspersed throughout the recording, there's a clear connection to the events of September 11, 2001. The Homecoming Friends and the Gaither Vocal Band sing backup to Burger on several cuts, including "America The Beautiful" and "Statue Of Liberty."

If anything, Burger is a bit more subdued in his performance than you'd expect. He's out front playing the melody, of course, but on many sections of songs, there's not the accompanying dramatic flair that you typically associate with Burger. That's not to say drama is lacking. He really cuts loose with a hammering stream of arpeggios on the final verse of "Battle Hymn Of The Republic," for example, after playing two verses in a more relaxed style. The contrast in styles is welcome, giving the recording more breadth of style. Other tunes include the well worn "Salute To The Troops" medley, which has been dusted off again and presented in an energetic manner.

A few songs that wouldn't normally be found on patriotic collection serve to put the events of September 11 into an eternal perspective. "Through It All" is the first example, pointing out the need to trust in God no matter what may happen. "People Need The Lord," "The King Is Coming," and "The Church Triumphant" are the last three songs on the project. These tunes look to the current need for witnessing more now than ever before as well as who will ultimately win in the end. All in all, Let Freedom Ring presents songs of patriotism with a Christian perspective.
