We Will Stand The Wilburns
Label: Homeland Entertainment Group
Producer: Otis Forrest
Length: 41:44
One of the defining moments of the 2001 National Quartet Convention came in the aftermath of the attacks on New York and Washington on September 11. The Wilburns were joined on stage by a small choir in bright red robes as they sang a dynamic anthem written by Jeff Steele and Ricky Atkinson:
Let this be the song of a whole new generation
We will stand, we will stand.
In the face of opposition we will not give up the fight.
We will stand, we will stand.
"We Will Stand" leads off The Wilburns' latest project of the same title. It sets the tone for "Monuments," the tune that follows:
Where are the monuments we should be building
So our children can find the way to get home?
We should be laying stones so they can follow
The pathway that leads to God's throne.
Three songs later, we hear the tune "I Simply Cling."
Jesus' blood flowed full and free.
Without question purchased me.
Should e'er I doubt my soul's been ransomed,
I simply cling to Calvary's tree.
Do you see how important *content* is to the Wilburns? They aren't satisfied with good production quality and catchy phrases. It's very nice to see a group making sure they sing lyrics that pack a punch.
We Will Stand is not all serious fare, of course. "Death Valley Days" is a fun, catchy song, and Jackie Wilburn works a humorous element in with "I Love Old People. The performance quality is certainly there as well. No one can deliver a ballad quite like Elaine Wilburn, who takes the lead on the classic "Better Farther On" as well as newer titles: "Telling The Old Story," "Where Would I Be?" and "Monuments."
If you buy CDs mainly for entertainment purposes, though, that's not what We Will Stand is all about. As the lyrics above attest, this project is worth examining below the surface level. You may even find yourself worshipping in spite of yourself.
