Dave's Review

Go!
Scott Neff

Rating: 2 STARS

Song Titles: "I've Got Joy," "I've Got Joy (Reprise)," "God On The Mountain," "Daystar," "Somebody Bigger Than You And I," "Drinking From My Saucer," "He's Four Days Late," "God's Gonna Send A Revival," "Don't You Wanna Go," "I Take Him Back," "He Grew The Tree," "If That Isn't Love," and "End Of The Beginning"

Scott Neff recorded Go! using stock soundtracks from the Christian World company. All the songs on Neff's CD are cover tunes with previously established arrangements, obviously. The music tracks themselves tend to be characteristically (for Chrisitian World) unevenly mixed and lacking in balance. Some are better than others though. Even so, using stock tracks can work if they are matched well with the vocalist. If you're on a tight budget and you're only going to record cover songs, it certainly makes a great deal of practical sense to license the use of existing tracks rather than spending a fortune making new ones in a studio .

Neff sings with a country flair. His diction suits some of the songs he's chosen like "I've Got Joy," "God On The Mountain," and "Drinking From My Saucer," but feels out of place on "Daystar" and "He's Four Days Late" (sic). He pulls off a decent Elvis Presley imitation with "Somebody Bigger Than You And I," which is probably the best track on the recording. The music track for "God's Gonna Send A Revival" sounds like it was played on a Casio keyboard with the auto accompaniment turned on (circa 1990). "Don't You Wanna Go" is quite a bit better, with some real violin and guitar parts thrown in to flesh out the programmed tracks. "I Take Him Back" also has a pretty good music bed, but Neff's vocal is a bit too pitchy even for country music on this cut. "End Of The Beginning" feels out of place stylistically when compared to the other 12 tracks on this CD, and it's an uneven match for Neff's vocal style.

This is the type of CD someone might make to sell to local audiences, friends and fellow church members. Although the artwork and graphic design is very nice and would tend to indicate otherwise, it's unfortunately a recording with a number of technical flaws. Of course, this review isn't meant to measure the ministry value of Neff's recording. It's merely an evaluation of the product's technical quality when compared to other CDs on the market.
