Dave's Review

Ponder, Sykes and Wright (Spring Hill)

by David Murray

Ponder, Sykes and Wright is a male Country/Southern Gospel trio who have previously been most noted for their roles behind the scenes as producers, writers, BGVs, etc. Excellent production, creative arrangements, and intriguing lyrics make their self-titled debut an enjoyable listen. There's a good mix of ballads and upbeat tunes, with a focus on three part harmony throughout, in the style of the Gatlin Brothers.

Lyrically, the songs consistently point to God, from "You Were On His Mind" to "He Still Speaks." There aren't really any new ideas presented that haven't been voiced before, but the songs Ponder, Sykes and Wright chose for this project give tried and true themes a slightly different twist. The upbeat "When Love Comes Knockin'" offers:

Flip on the light. Undo the chain. Nothing to lose, so much to gain. Open up your heart and let down your hair. It's a bona fide prescription for your worries and cares.

From a musical standpoint, Ponder, Sykes, and Wright is a trip through country music and Southern Gospel history. "Come and Go With Me" is in the bluegrass style of Flatt and Scruggs. "When Love Comes Knockin'" will be appealing to the fans of Mickey Gilley or Ray Charles. There's a remake of the hymn "Higher Ground" that's in a driving modern country style similar to The Gaither Vocal Band's "John The Revelator." A project by accomplished and experienced studio singer/musicians, this debut recording sounds like a project by seasoned veterans.
