Dave's Review

A Nutshell Review
Invention:
Phil Keaggy, Wes King, and Scott Denté (Sparrow)

by David Murray

Invention is 11 tunes from three of the pre-eminent guitarists in Christian music. Phil Keaggy and Wes King are successful solo artists, while Scott Denté is the husband half of the pop duo Out Of The Grey. The trio was joined by bassist Chris Kent and drummer Ken Lewis on several cuts. Only four of the tunes on Invention have lyrics. The most interesting titles are actually from the songs with no lyrics. These include "Budapest Control," "Isle Of Skye," "The Moors Of Bellevue," and "Perspicuity" among others. The choice cut is "The Quote Jester," which features Phil Keaggy only. It appears he has played an extraordinary solo TWICE matching note for note and panned the two takes to the right and left stereo channels. On most of the tunes, each member of the trio plays three or four different instruments with diversity from a mandolin to an E-bow. Guitar connoisseurs should be pleased to know that the model name of each instrument is included in the liner notes.
