The Gaither Vocal Band and a few "Homecoming Friends" (Gloria Gaither, The Martins, Vestal Goodman, Janet Paschal, Anthony Burger, and Jake Hess) recently visited the fiftieth state for a Hawaiian Homecoming. (What's next? Aussie Homecoming?) The seventeen tunes on the CD include seven selections that feature the Gaither Vocal Band exclusively, four with the GVB plus additional vocalists, and six that feature their guests. The video contains 20 more minutes of material, along with interviews, and commentary about their location in Maui.
Some highlights:
1) What started out as a line from a Mark Lowry comedy routine has blossomed into a quaint tune called "Mary Was The First One To Carry The Gospel." A studio version will be available on Lowry's upcoming solo recording.
2) The Maui First Assembly Of God Church Choir backs Janet Paschal on a rockabilly/gospel tune called "Born Again."
3) Jake Hess does a snappy little jazz number called "I Don't Think, I Know" with background vocals by The Martins.
4) The full cast closes the album with the classic Gaither tune "The King Is Coming."
Hawaiian Homecoming differs from most other "Homecoming" products in that the credits list the performers for each song (a welcome improvement). Also, due to the smaller line-up of groups and soloists, the typical "Homecoming" choir/large group sound is missing from this recording. Compared to previous projects, Hawaiian Homecoming is most like Back Home In Indiana.
