After a few years stuggling with "the industry," Vigilantes Of Love have found themselves free of contractual obligations and are choosing the advantages of independent distribution. Frontman Bill Mallonee promises that the group will "release (songs) as written" in the future, finances permitting. To their fans, this means a wealth of music is coming with greater frequency than ever before.

With a more stripped down musical approach than Slow Dark Train, VOL's new release To The Roof Of The Sky is superior to most of the schlock played on pop radio. With a blend of driving acoustic and electric guitar tones the album is mostly Southern Rock. There's an occassional foray into country and even one rockabilly/bluegrass melding ("Opposite's True"). Although not a musically superlative recording, the tracks are above average. The real value of any VOL recording is found in Bill Mallonee's lyrics, however:

There's a time for listening to the thunder. There's a time for cleansing of sins. There's a time when I'm slowly going under. This time isn't one of them. No, this time isn't one of them.

There's a time when joy is so elusive; out of your grasp and three sheets to the wind. There's a time (when) crying is conducive. This time isn't one of them. No, this time isn't one of them.

Most of my life's been like a wedding the moment where the bride and groom kiss. Sometimes I can't believe all that I'm hoping. This moment feels like one of them. This moment feels like one of them. . . .

That holy life should count for something. Those blessed words ever be recalled. Remember well who has really loved you. To be loved is the best of all. To be loved is the best of all. To be loved is the best of all.
