Preparing the Way: Gold City (Riversong)

by David Murray

Preparing The Way is the first album from Gold City since Jonathan Wilburn took over duties as lead singer. It kicks off with "You're at the Well," a rolicking tune in typical Gold City style that should make all of their fans happy. This is followed by "Pray" in a slower tempo. With the 3rd tune things begin to take a unique twist. "Hello In Heaven" has a driving bass line with horn stabs. It sounds more like the current Oak Ridge Boys than Southern Gospel. "Higher Than the Moon" is similarly different (if that makes any sense). This tune is a remake of the 1972 Statesman arrangement, with fluctuating tempos and a "chorus line" style ending. I can't wait to see Tim and the boys doing those leg kicks in concert!

Another unique tune is "Every Moment," penned by Terry and Barbi Franklin, and arranged in a 20s, slow-paced, big-band style. The harmonies are tremendous on this one. They apply a pleasant rubato to the words "Every moment" each time they enter the chorus. The entrance to the second chorus provides a surprising key change as well, and the ending is sweet as honey. It's most exquisite!

The remainder of the album is pretty much standard Gold City fare. "When The Lamb Becomes The Light" and "It's Still The Cross" are reminiscent of the popular "Midnight Cry." I do wish they would have included a tune in the style of "How Deep Is The Water?" featuring Tim Riley. He doesn't really growl any on the entire album.

Overall, I would give this album a "9" on a scale of 1 to 10. A listen will make it easy to see why Gold City is considered to be one of the top groups in the Southern Gospel industry. They give you what you expect in ample supply, but they also stretch the boundaries beyond the expected.
